Is Abortion Allowed In Islam?

Abortion is a hot topic issue and women all over the world are having abortions. In fact, abortion is allowed in all countries for varying reasons except seven countries: Malta, Andorra, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and the Philippines.

Ten Muslim countries including Turkey and Albania allow abortion for any reason. Thirty-six Muslim countries allow abortion for different reasons including to save a mother’s life, health, rape, or if the baby has an impairment.

In Islam, abortion is generally permitted only before the 120th day of pregnancy (just over 17 weeks). This is based on the belief the soul enters the body then. 

But, what does God say about babies? Psalm 139 tells us that God knows us when we’re in our mother’s womb. That means as soon as conception, your life matters. God knew you and that means that God knows your baby. 

The Bible also tells us that your baby is in heaven. Your baby has a name.

Healing After Abortion

One aspect about abortion that people rarely discuss is the emotional pain a woman will generally go through after her abortion. It may not reach the surface of a woman's mind until years later, perhaps. Women often block the pain of their abortions for years. They block memories. In other cases they feel emotionally triggered when they visit certain areas where the abortion clinic is. Other women will note that they can't drink orange juice anymore and later they realize that was given to them after their abortion.

Women have abortions for a variety of reasons. If you find that you're at a crossroads and don't know if you should have an abortion, know that God will care for you and your baby. Depending on where you live, you may have resources available to help you and your baby.
